Serial Number Detection for Windows and Linux Hosts
Serial numbers for Windows and Linux hosts were previously missing or unreliable, especially in cloud and virtual environments where BIOS serials may be placeholder values. A new multi-source detection system has been introduced that uses an 8-step fallback for Windows and a 10-step fallback for Linux, covering cloud Instance Metadata Service (IMDS) on AWS, Azure, and GCP, plus DMI, IPMI, and registry sources. The system automatically filters known junk values and normalizes UUIDs for virtual machines.
Where the fix appears
The improved serial-number detection is visible in the following locations:
| Location | What changed |
|---|---|
| CMDB > any Host CI > Detail page | Serial Number is now reliably populated for Windows, Linux, and cloud instances. |
| Discovered Items | Host serial numbers are populated correctly across physical, virtual, cloud, and container environments. |
Procedure
Complete the following steps after upgrading to v6.1.2 to apply the new detection logic to existing hosts.
-
Re-scan Windows and Linux hosts.
Trigger a re-scan of affected Windows and Linux hosts to populate the improved serial numbers.
-
Update the Discovery Agent.
For agent-based scans, deploy the updated agent to pick up the new serial-number detection logic.
