Resolve IP to Hostname Scan Mode

A new Resolve IP to Hostname scan mode has been introduced for supported discovery types. When enabled, the scanner performs a DNS lookup for each IP address before starting the scan and uses the resolved hostname for discovery operations. Devices with failed DNS resolution are marked as Unknown and skipped from asset creation, preventing incomplete or duplicate assets.

Previous and new behavior

The following table summarizes how the discovery flow has changed:

Previous behavior New behavior
Scans operated only using direct IP addresses or manually entered hostnames. IP addresses can be resolved to hostnames automatically before scanning.
No hostname validation was performed during IP-based scans. Each IP is validated through a DNS lookup before discovery starts.
Failed hostname resolution could still create incomplete or duplicate assets. Devices with failed DNS resolution are marked as Unknown and skipped from asset creation.
Administrators had only two scan modes: IP Range and Hostname Scan. A third scan mode, Resolve IP to Hostname, is now available.

Supported scan types

The new scan mode is available for the following scan types:

Scan type Availability
Windows Major Components Discovery Supported
Deep Host Scan (WMIC, SSH, SNMP) Supported
Deep Host Scan (SSH, SNMP, PowerShell) Supported

Where the scan mode appears

The new scan mode and its results are visible in the following locations:

Location What changed
Discovery > Run A Scan page A new Resolve IP to Hostname option is available in supported scan types.
Scan execution logs DNS hostname resolution details are now logged during discovery.
Discovered assets Assets are created using resolved hostnames instead of raw IPs.
Discovery results Devices without successful DNS resolution appear as Unknown.

Note: No manual migration is required. The new scan mode is available immediately after upgrade, and existing scan configurations are unaffected. Ensure that DNS resolution is properly configured in the environment for accurate hostname discovery.
